Biography

Born in 1934 in Port-au-Prince, Claude Dambreville married the daughter of Pétion Savain, painter of the first generation. After completing secondary school and being on the radio, he socialised with artists and enrolled in the art center. It was at 34 that he began to paint seriously. He also wrote a lot, and in 1983 received the Deschamps prize for “A taste of gall”.

He lives in the USA, without forgetting his homeland. He mainly painted women, long white or blue silhouettes selling their products at the market. Turbans, hats and baskets enhance the pastel tones of their outfits. Vertical lines and drapes, the architecture is solid and calm.

Dambreville, whose painting is too scholarly to be classed among the naïve, has long since achieved international notoriety. Although Haitian by birth, heart, sensitivity, he exhibits everywhere and is appreciated by collectors.
