‘Identity’ / Anna Zekavati
–
Opening Times Tuesday 16th April 1pm - 6pm Wednesday - Friday 10am - 6pm Saturday 20th April 10am - 5pm
In “Identity”, Anna Zekavati delves deep into the complexities of a woman’s journey, highlighting the obstacles and societal expectations that often overshadow one’s true identity. Each painting in the series features a barcode, symbolizing the cultural and societal constraints that women face as they navigate through different stages of life.
This series offers an expressive exploration of her experiences as a woman navigating between Eastern and Western cultures. From her formative years in childhood to her academic pursuits, culminating in a PhD, and her subsequent professional and motherhood roles, her journey is woven into each canvas.
Through her expressive brushstrokes and imagery, she highlights the complex and contradictory aspects of womanhood that must coexist, such as emotion and power, strength and vulnerability, resilience and fragility, external and internal beauty, motherhood and careers…
“Dealing with these extreme opposites and finding balance is a significant challenge of being a woman,” says Anna, whose recent series of expressionist paintings will be exhibited for the first time at The Coningsby Gallery.
The exhibition invites viewers to embark on a visual journey through the multifaceted nature of womanhood, and reflect on their own journeys of self-discovery and identity by remembering the importance of embracing and being proud of who you are and what you desire.
“The only thing I have learned is to find strength in yourself. No one can help you, no one can do anything for you, you have to do the work yourself.”
~Marina Abramovic, performance artist
