‘Seeing the Light’ is Gareth Edwards’ fifth solo exhibition with Jill George Gallery and consists of large canvases, oils on paper and smaller studies inspired by the Cornish coastline and Devon River landscapes.
Both embrace water from the land, the one tidal and unforgiving and the other more tranquil and reflective. But the connection is, ‘Riddled with light’ as Yeats describes or, ‘Seeing the Light’ with its biblical and poetic references, (Heaney after Yeats).
The artist draws us to his recent experience by the river Dart in Devon, when drawing on a stone bridge over the river under the trees overhanging the water. He was sheltering from rain when the whole surface of the water shifted from side to side with the brilliance of light having the effect of drawing the eye and body down the river towards the light; light through willows on water.
These paintings in the exhibition shine with the uplighting effects of light on water; from rivers to Oceans to the restful lights of a harbour at twilight.
‘They have all been made in my studio perched on the Porthmeor Beach in St Ives famous for its light qualities and glittering mica, under a huge glass skylight which helps to imbue each painting with its own inner light’.
