Artist’s Statement.
After nearly 50 years living in Fitzrovia, the last decade with Llewelyn Thomas - the great poet’s son - before his untimely death, & returning with this exhibition after 12 years away, I come with a show inspired by the death of my dear sister & my own brush with death too, which has focused me greatly.
I am also fascinated by customs around death in different cultures and the ‘sin eaters’ of Wales who are paid to dine after the funeral of a dead person and take on their sins. More recently the culture of ‘death doulas’ who come to give emotional help to the dying and their families. I have also included my painted funerary chargers : plates of gold, which traditionally carry bowls of food at the ‘Mercy meal’ on the day of the dead.
My website displays my work at https://www.fionagreen.art/art and my email address is mailto:fionaskene@hotmail.com
Mel Gooding : art critic
“I have known Fiona Green for over 30 years . She is a lovely person, vivacious & convivial, an enjoyer of good company & excellent company herself. Believing in art as a means to self-definition and to the development of a personal vision, she taught art for many years in some of the toughest schools in London, and also as a specialist with difficult students.
Fiona is not only a greatly gifted artist herself, working with a passionate intensity & inspired by her activism be it with the homeless, asylum seekers or against war; her paintings are powerful & often dramatic. She has all her life been a close, true, & greatly valued friend to artists & writers ,including some of the best of our time.”
