Andy is both printmaker and illustrator and his sharp graphic eye brings shape and texture to his printmaking. His drive to draw and paint and experiment with what he sees results in a kind of abstraction, a reduction in the elements of the image. His prints are instantly recognisable and are always evocative.
“My work as a printmaker is inspired by drawing and painting in the landscape/cityscape and increasingly, a desire to abstract, partially deconstruct or visually redact the images that result.
The screenprint and monotype processes both allow and encourage a bold interpretation of these initial sketches and paintings done on location whilst both being very different.
Silkscreen is, by its nature binary, on or off, tone implied through graphic texture and layering. The reverse is true of monotype which offers up sensual and nuanced tonal prints with a depth and complexity that belie the simplicity of ink rolled onto a metal plate. ”
