David Mahoney | Black + White
–
Black + White is a body of works by David Mahoney. The exhibition centres around portraits of leading individuals who operate in disparate and opposing ways; from the likes of the Rolling Stones to Kanye West, Miley Cyrus to Adele and Putin to Obama.
“In this series I wanted to try to unify these contrasting figures in a similar style, with simple black ink wash backgrounds, black clothing and small pen drawings around their portraits that each person can be identified by.
I work digitally, after illustrating the portraits in squid ink, pen, pencil and watercolour. Squid ink being my primary medium, and since working with it has dictated how my work looks. I now find myself exploring texture, brushstrokes and subtle information such as symbolism in my work than colour. I too find working in colour to be overpowering and I now tend to save using colour for few pieces where I find it appropriate.” David Mahoney 2014
