Jill George Gallery / LOOKING BACK/LOOKING FORWARD / Fraser Taylor
–
The Gallery is delighted to announce the forthcoming exhibition of new work, ’Looking Back/Looking Forward’, by Fraser Taylor - his first in London since 2004.
The Gallery exhibited Fraser’s work on graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1983 followed by numerous, highly successful solo exhibitions and collaborations with David Band. In 2001 Fraser was appointed lecturer at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He returned to live and work in Glasgow in 2017.
This new body of work was conceived during lockdown in 2020 and is the outcome of revisiting work he made in the late 1970’s and the 1980s. In 2014 Taylor discovered boxes that contained work that he made from 1977 – 1987. Taylor had assumed this work had been lost. This collection was donated to the Archives and Collections at Glasgow School of Art.
It provided a unique opportunity for Taylor to look back and conclude how this early work shaped the trajectory of his practice as a visual artist and designer. Drawings from the archive depicting figurative shadows cast over Scottish landscape and sketches of sculptural forms from the British Museum provided the motivation for this new work.
