Opening Times 11am - 6pm
The Coningsby Gallery is proud to present “Love letter for a world on fire” a fantastic exhibition by British artist Alec Cazas, from November 30th to December 6th. The exhibition will be opened by Peter Tatchell.
This exciting collection of small and large oil and acrylic paintings places LOVE as its central subject creating an unforgettable representation of this most cherished emotion, with many of its virtues and flaws. A striking contemporary show on a timeless subject.
With a skilful manipulation of colours and varied materials, Alec’s works take the viewers on a dazzling journey through images of innocent love to more challenging portrayals of this vastly complicated emotion. Light and shadows. Strength and fragility are found in his artworks with a decisive delicate brushwork in his depictions of nature, human figures and more. Wholesome emotion gallops freely through his tender illustration of loving couples. Seen and imagined. As in the cases of his “Love can last forever” piece, where a couple gently sits on a moon hanging in the middle of a glittering night’s sky, or in “Lovers making love behind the daisies” an exuberant bucolic British landscape.
The artist is not afraid of mixing materials, techniques and styles, fantasy and reality, allowing the viewers to immerse themselves in the bold or subtle messages contained in each artwork. This exhibition is a take on love like no other. From a positive child-like vision of the world to a more elaborated order of organisation. Understanding love as a powerful negative motivator. Love is seen in its flawed manifestation in “Choose nature, choose love, choose life”. Here, a mighty yet vulnerable disrobed figure, leans on the ground, transfixed by the beauty of a butterfly. He seems unaware of the incoming devastation, announced by drones and a war tank looming behind him, threatening to crush or bomb him to death. A strong thought provoking image that raises questions about the obsessive love of weapons in modern politics and the fragility of life and nature.
In another captivating painting, King Charles stares directly out of the canvas at the viewer in a memorable pose, as a guardian of the environment, carrying the burden of a world in climate turmoil while seeking to protect vulnerable species. It’s the portrait of an intensely human king. Dignified but removed from his symbols of royal power in order to focus the attention of the spectators on the essential issue: his long life commitment to environmental conservation.
Tenderness and violence seem to converge in this remarkable exhibition. But there is room for hope through the transcendental power of love, offered in the show. It comes in the shape of a large vibrantly painted “Love letter” as referred in the title. For this art piece, the artist went out into the streets and got passersby involved in the making of it. Cazas wanted, he explained, to confirm that people are innately good willing, disposed to befriend strangers and support good causes. Despite the toxicity of the current public political discourse that threatens to engulf the world. It is a fascinating and intriguing artwork that offers an alternative positive possibility as a response to the ominous dread dripping relentlessly, day after day, from the national and global news.
This exciting exhibition casts a bright light on society’s intricate workings. It’s defiantly contemporary, complex and original. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience this unique event at Coningsby Gallery, 30 Tottenham St, London, W1T 4RJ, from Nov 30th to Dec 6th.
