‘Object Art’ is the third in a series of exhibitions by Balthazar Mattar exploring the theme of emotional ambiguity.
Each work reflects this central idea , the centrepiece being a large scale triptych: ‘Object Heaven ’ ‘Object Dance’ ‘Object Me You Us’.
In the foreground of the triptych stand a group of entwined graphic figures caught in an ambiguous physical embrace. They are set against a backdrop of colour and words that appear to be commenting on the events before them. This juxtaposition expresses the uneasy relationship between participation and objectification inherent in the human condition.
An immediate reading of the art work is that it mirrors the tension existent at the heart of even our closest relationships, where we simultaneously objectify and immerse ourselves in others. But beyond that the exhibition ripples out, to reflect not only our roles as observers and participants in our own lives, but also in our environment as a whole.
It challenges us with the fundamental question of how far we objectify what surrounds us and how far we recognise not only our participation, but also our interdependence on the world at large.
