Artist’s Statement:
A woman in a shop once said to me, if you don’t tap out with your tube pass, you’ll ‘be forever travelling’
That phrase simultaneously amused and inspired me. ‘Revolutions per minute’ is about themes and ideas coming round again. In the last decade I’ve had exhibitions in London, Hannover, Paris, Sardinia and Faro, which have positively informed and refreshed my work. Responding to communicating in different languages and cultures, there’s been a simplification, a bolder palette, a more direct use of paint.
Everyone has responded individually to the pandemic and the social and political turbulence in the world. I’ve been using my work ethic as a means of survival. This exhibition is intuitive. I’ve taken different periods and grouped them, fitting new work with old, not necessarily thematically, but in structure, composition, texture and with a certain internal logic. An evolution of ideas. A free association of images.
Another nice quote I’m using, which describes this is ‘strip everything back to the essentials, but don’t throw out the poetry’
